Ad BLOK VAN DER VELDEN (Dordrecht 1913 - San Remo 1980)
He is considered the best-known Texel painter, although he also worked on Terschelling and in France and Italy.
His Texel work shows a great commitment to the island. He captured the bright coastal light like no other. He painted and drew the Texel landscape, farms and beach and dune views. In the last year of the war, Blok van der Velden, together with about a hundred other Texel residents, was forced to work in Assen to work on the Zwolle-Delfzijl defense line. Blok van der Velden saw the opportunity to produce a large number of Drenthe drawings under these difficult circumstances. Blok, as he was simply called, had trained at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. He also drew, painted, watercoloured, etched and lithographed. His preference was for landscapes, flowers, portraits, figures and still lifes, which he depicted in a somewhat romantic manner. Blok van der Velden is buried on Texel.
