Bas GALIS (Meerssen 1890 – Winsum 1981)


Bas Galis initially trained as a goldsmith at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and later studied at the art academy in Brussels. He worked as a sculptor, painter, and medalist, taking lessons from Jan Wiegers. After the Second World War, Galis joined De Onafhankelijken (The Independents), a group of artists he remained a member of until 1960. He created figurative and later more abstract paintings, as well as sculptures and medals. For the city of Groningen, he created, among other works, the concrete sculpture "Woman with Two Dolphins," which was later relocated to the Piccardthof allotment garden complex.
