Education: Constant studied from 1939 to 1942 at the Applied Arts School and the State Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam. Lived and worked in Amsterdam.

Constant was co-founder of the COBRA movement, a movement that emerged within modern art in the late 1940s. Constant was in the company of Karel Appel, Corneille, Anton Rooskens, Jan Nieuwenhuijs, Eugene Brands, Lucebert and Theo Wolvecamp, the more theoretician of this style. Constant Nieuwenhuys painted still lifes, self-portraits of animals, flowers and non-figurative. After meeting Asger Jorn, fantasy animals, aggressive and frightening, and human figures appeared in his paintings. In 1950 the war paintings were created. At the end of the 1950s, he developed ideas about the ideal city of New Babylon. In the 1970s, he focused more on drawing and painting, where the old masters were his main source of inspiration.

Belongs to the following movements/groups: CoBrA
