Ernie BARNES (Durham, North Carolina 1938 – Los Angeles 2009)


Ernie Barnes attended North Carolina College, where he studied art alongside his career as a professional American football player. From the 1960s onward, he devoted himself entirely to painting. His work is characterized by elongated figures and dynamic compositions that depict movement, music, and sports. Working primarily in oils, Barnes shaped African-American daily life with rhythm and expression. His 1976 painting "The Sugar Shack" achieved iconic fame through its use on Marvin Gaye's album cover. Barnes's oeuvre is held in several American museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.
