Ferdinand OLDEWELT

Ferdinand Gustaaf Willem Oldewelt was born in 1857 in Amsterdam and died in 1935 in Laren.
Education: From 1871 to 1878, Oldewelt attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He also went to the Academy in Antwerp. Oldewelt lived and worked in Amsterdam, Antwerp, Haarlem, Groningen, Rotterdam and Laren.
From 1872 to 1935, Ferdinand Oldewelt was active as a painter, etcher, draftsman and watercolorist of (flower) still lifes, figure and genre scenes, landscapes, portraits and cityscapes. In 1890 he was one of the first to paint in Laren, which would later become an artists' village. However, he did not live here until 1922. From 1891 to 1896 Oldewelt was an art teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem, from 1896 he taught at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he later became director. From 1903 to 1922 he was head teacher at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae, where he was second secretary from 1893. He was also a member of Kunstgroep MAB, Pulchri Studio and the Association of Visual Artists Laren-Blaricum.
