Company Regout & Co
Regout & co glass-cutting factory was founded in Maastricht in 1827 by Petrus Regout, dealer in glass, crystal and pottery. In order to remain competitive, the polishing company set up its own glassworks in 1839. In this period, mainly table glassware was produced. At the end of the nineteenth century, the name was changed to NV Kristal-, glass- and pottery factory De Sphinx. The factory became the most important glass and crystal producer in the Netherlands. Glass production ceased in 1925 as a result of the merger with glass factory Stella from his son Louis Regout to form the Kristalunie. In 1958 NV Crystal, glass and pottery factories De Sphinx v/h Petrus Regout & Co merged with NV Société Céramique to form NV Koninklijke Sphinx.
Nineteenth century production mainly consisted of richly cut crystal, semi-crystal, pressed glassware, consumer items and lighting. Before Regout set up his own glassworks, much of the crystal that was worked came from Val-Saint-Lambert. From 1850, the decorations became more complex with bands and honeycombs in addition to the vertical facets used for this purpose.
