Floris VERSTER (Leiden 1861 - 1927)
As a child, Floris Verster received drawing lessons from, among others, George Breitner. Later he was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. His early work in particular belongs to the style of the Hague style. He also worked for a while in Brussels where he became acquainted with Jan Toorop and James Ensor, during this period he worked with rough brushstrokes and intense colours. Later his work became much more still and he painted many still lifes. Mrs. Kröller-Müller bought a lot of work by Floris Vester, her museum still has an extensive collection of his work. Both in 1961 and in 2012, the Lakenhal in Verster's hometown of Leiden held an exhibition about his work.
