Francine Somers was born in Ghent on March 2, 1923. Her father was a goldsmith, jeweler, engraver and watchmaker on Dampoortstraat. Her mother was very musical and studied piano and singing at the Ledeberg music school. Little Francine grew up in this artistic midst, under the tones and sounds of her mother's piano and her father's clarinet and mandolin. Her father taught her to draw very early on and the streets of Ghent were the ideal setting for the artist-to-be, who roamed the city as a child sketching. She was only seven when her exceptional talent for drawing was noticed by Jules De Bruycker, who promptly exhibited her drawings in the town hall of Ledeberg, alongside works by painter Jozef Horenbant. Thanks to her talent for drawing, she was allowed to enroll at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts at the age of thirteen, earlier than other students. She would follow the lessons of the Ghent Academy from 1936 to 1943. Jos Verdegem was her teacher living Model, Still life, Etching techniques and Sketches. She also took lessons with Oscar Coddron and Beatrice Colpaert and during the war summers took the 'Plein Air' painting class with Victor De Budt. Her fellow students included Camille D'Havé and Geo Vindevogel. She graduated with two awards: the Academy's first prize (gold medal) and the “Jean Delvin” prize. The participation in the Godecharle prize in 1943 gave Francine Somers a second place. In 1948 she won the famous “Prix Jeanne Pipyn” for the most promising young artist. In addition to her academic training, Francine particularly enjoyed the countless artists who visited her father at the Somers home. She maintained good contacts with Maurice Dupuis, Lucie Jacquart, Cécile Cauterman and Victor Stuyvaert. The contacts with Marcel Hoste were also very cordial and we can even speak of a mutual influence.
