Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)

Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect and designer best known for designing the Guggenheim Museum in the 1940s and 1950s, among other things. He started his career at the University of Wisconsin. After college, he worked for Joseph L. Silsbee and Adler & Sullivan. In 1893 he started his own firm that focused on the construction of private homes in Chicago. In the early twentieth century he left for Japan, where he also founded a bureau in 1915. After the Depression in the 1930s, his career flourished again with commissions for the SC Johnson & Son Wax Administration Building (1936-1939) and the home of Edgar J. Kaufmann (1935-1939). Wright's buildings often included furniture and accessories, thereby striving for spiritual unity and harmony. In this way he made designs that resulted in the most pleasant possible experience of the spaces. Wright abandoned the Arts-and-crafts style and focused more on geometry and clear lines. Wright's work ethic dictates that design should be in harmony with people and their environment, and this philosophy led to the Organic Design movement.
