Frans VAN LEEMPUTTEN (Werchter 1850 - Antwerp 1914)
Van Leemputten was the son of Jan Frans Van Leemputten, a farmer turned animal painter who moved to Brussels in 1858 to work as a restorer in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. Later he had his own restoration workshop where the young Frans sometimes helped him. His older brother was the animal painter Cornelis Van Leemputten.
From 1865 to 1873 he attended evening classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels with, among others, Paul Lauters. It was Lauters who motivated him to choose landscape painting. Van Leemputten was influenced by his good friend Constantin Meunier, by Louis Dubois and by the Dutch landscape painter Paul Gabriel. Together with Meunier and Franz Courtens, he was a member of the drawing club La Patte de Dindon.
