Claisse is a French artist whose work is considered to be part of post-war geometric abstraction. She lives and works in Paris.
As a pupil and assistant to Auguste Herbin, from the same village in northern France, she was fascinated by abstract art and in particular by geometric abstraction, which was given a new impulse after the Second World War. In 1958 she had her first major solo exhibitions at the Caille Gallery in Cambrai and the Hybler Gallery in Paris. Although the compositions of her first canvases are reminiscent of Herbin's style, her oeuvre has had its own recognizable style from the start. Like artists such as Guy Vandenbranden, Mark Verstockt and Luc Peire in Flanders, she remains very faithful to geometric abstraction despite all the – sometimes short-lived – figurative turns in art history. Yet her oeuvre is quite varied and can be divided into different periods, each with its own characteristics in terms of color and form.
