Georg Jensen (1866-1935)

Georg JENSEN (Radvad 1866 - Hellerup 1935)

Georg Jensen came into contact with silver at a young age and it soon became apparent that he had talent. The Jensen family moved to Copenhagen so that Georg would have the opportunity to gain experience. However, this turned out differently than expected. In Copenhagen, Jensen graduated in sculpture and in 1898 founded his own pottery workshop where he produced ceramics. He was inspired by designer CC Peters, who worked in Neoclassical style and went to work at the ceramics company Bing & Grondahl. In 1904, Jensen decided to exchange ceramics for silver after all, and that same year he founded his own silversmith's shop. Here he designed, among other things, Arts & Crafts jewelry that featured many natural shapes. Gradually, this Arts & Crafts style changed to Art Deco, where the shapes were more stylized. Jensen achieved great success with his workshop and opened a showroom in New York in 1924. In addition, many well-known designers came to work for him. After Jensen died in 1935, his son took over the company. In the period after the Second World War there was a clear simplification in silverware. This emphasized the functional and aesthetic character of Scandinavian Design. In 1973 Georg Jensen's workshop became part of Royal Copenhagen.
