Gerrit Hendrik Dekkers was born in 1929 in Borne (Overijssel).
Education:
From 1950 to 1954, Dekkers was educated at the Academy of Art and Industry in Enschede.
Lives and works in Giethoorn (Overijssel).
Photography is for Ger Dekkers the means to portray his landscape observations in a conceptual way. He often places these photos of landscapes carefully in a grid, with each photo deviating slightly from the previous one; Dekkers has gained international recognition with this work. After completing his education, Dekkers established himself as a graphic designer in Enschede, where he ran the design studio 'Studio Vincent' until 1970, together with Kees van Barneveld and Chris Hein. In 1961, in collaboration with Henk Schuring and Jan Bolink, Dekkers founded the First Enschede Artists' Society, whose campaigns attracted a lot of national attention. After an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1969, Dekkers made his international breakthrough a year later with a solo exhibition at the Museum Kröller-Müller. In 1973 Dekkers moved to Giethoorn, where he still lives. Around that time, he was awarded several travel and work grants from the Ministry of Culture. He also worked as a commissioned photographer until 2002, mainly for the provinces of Overijssel and Flevoland.
Exhibitions and prizes:
In addition to the important exhibitions in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Museum Kröller-Müller, Dekkers was present at the Dokumenta 6 in 1977 with the continuous projection of 25 Planned landscapes. His work New Dutch Seascapes was also exhibited in the Dutch pavilion at the EXPO '98 in Lisbon.
