Gert Fris (Zaandam 1951) lives and works in Enschede. He teaches visual subjects at Greijdanus-Enschede and is also a visual artist.
He has been working as a graphic artist since 1975, but in addition to graphics he also makes sculptures, most of which are unique bronzes.
GRAPHICS: As a graphic technique he uses letterpress; a kind of stamping technique in which the parts to be printed are higher than the surroundings. He works in his studio at home on a large Korrex test press. He cuts the shapes to be printed from cardboard or board.
His work has shown a recognizable style in recent years. The substantive point of departure is usually the wealth that the Bible offers him in images.
He shows this content in a formal language borrowed from the shapes of Chinese characters. He will change, arrange and redraw the forms of the Chinese writing until a new image is created that can ultimately be used to express what he wants.
He makes frequent use of symbolism. The colors red (blood), white (cleansing), and yellow (sun) are common. Light as a condition for life in the form of the sun and rays is a frequently used theme. The sun often stands for Jesus Christ who said of himself that he is the “Sun of righteousness” and the “Light of the world”. Often a connection to the top can be seen above the sun; between God and the world. Much of his work is colorful and is printed by himself in sometimes 12-15 printing runs, usually in small runs.
IMAGES: He creates his bronze sculptures on the basis of a number of form themes. Within each theme, he makes a few more each year. He does the entire process in-house. It is surprising that sometimes images arise that have a strong relationship between form and his graphics.
