Gijb ZAALBERG (Zoeterwoude-Village 1937)
Gijb Zaalberg is the son of Meindert Zaalberg and the brother of Herman Zaalberg (II). At a young age he already follows an internal training at the family business Potterij Zaalberg. He is also training at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. At Potterij Zaalberg he produces many series designs, while in his spare time he is involved with unique pieces. Different phases can be distinguished within his ceramic production. In his younger years he made simple and sleek pots. This came from the inspiration he got in Italy when he worked there for a period. In the years that followed, he shifted his interest to geometric shapes, which he combined into surprising compositions. He develops his own style here. Finally, he was inspired by Science Fiction for a period, giving the work a surrealistic character. In addition to being a ceramist, Gijb is also a sculptor and creates many architectural and spatial forms.
