Harrie GERRITZ (Wijchen 1940)
Painter, Graphic artist
Education:
Harrie Gerritz was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts, Arnhem.
He lives and works in Wijchen.
Harrie Gerritz paints the Dutch landscape, in which the Land van Maas en Waal is his place. He constantly draws new inspiration from this flat area, bordered by the two large rivers, in which only a farm, a church, cows in a meadow hold the attention for a while. Here he was born and raised; he lives there and has his studio there. Harrie Gerritz always looks at reality in a different way and portrays it differently every time. In his work, Harrie Gerritz shows us that landscape, upholstered with some trees, a house, a barn, a fence, birds and cattle, with the horizon on the border and the sky above. Although these image elements have been abstracted and stacked in the image plane (no attempt has been made to create the illusion of space), the overall image remains recognizable. Initially they are figurative landscapes, surrounded by a frame. Striking here is the absence of persons.
The visual language is also developing. The landscape still forms the basis of his paintings, but he increasingly sees it in close-up. Harrie Gerritz reduces the landscape elements to a select number of images that he examines in varying proportions. What was once recognizable as a church tower, house or fence has now been transformed into a geometric shape. In this way, the artist reduces the visible reality in a pictorial way to what it actually is on the flat surface: a colour, an essential form, a painterly composition element. Yet Harrie Gerritz remains a landscape painter. His paintings resemble windows that offer a window onto a landscape; an imaginary landscape that does not appear as such in everyday reality. He combines, reduces and manipulates landscape data. He can do that because the landscape is 'inside him', as it were.
