Designer Hendrik Petrus Berlage is known for his work as an artist, architect and furniture designer. His best-known design is perhaps the Amsterdam Stock Exchange (1903). Berlage was born in Amsterdam in 1856, where he returned to study at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. Later he also studied at the Eidgenössische Polytechnic School in Zurich, where he came into contact with the work of Gottfried Semper and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. In the nineties of the nineteenth century he worked for and together with architect Th. sander.
In 1889 he became independent and devoted himself to the development of a new architectural style: the New Objectivity. With this he stood at the foot of the rationalistic architectural style that was so important to the Amsterdam School. He also used his ideas about construction, functionality and decoration to design objects and utensils such as furniture and dinnerware.
