Herman van Wissen (1910-2000)
Hermanus Johannes (Herman) van Wissen (December 27, 1910 - April 23, 2000) was a Dutch architect and painter. Van Wissen was the son of the architect AL van Wissen (1878-1955), who built the town hall of Uithuizermeeden. designed. Van Wissen followed courses at the HTS architecture in Groningen, the Art History Institute in Rome and the Graphic Center in Groningen. In the 1930s he was a student of Jan Derksen Staats (painting) and Anne Huitema (graphic techniques). As a painter, Van Wissen mainly worked with Siberian chalk, watercolor, tempera and oil paint. He mainly painted landscapes in a figurative-expressionist style. Van Wissen was a member of the art circle ?De Regenboog? in Groningen and (board) member of the Groningen art circle De Ploeg. He made study trips to Greece, Hungary, Israel, Yugoslavia, Austria, Rome and the United States. In 1946 Van Wissen designed a resistance monument for Groningen in the form of a gate, which was placed on the RK Kerkhof on Hereweg. As an architect he received many commissions for housing after the Second World War. In the second half of the 1950s, the Catholic Van Wissen was mainly commissioned to design churches. After his retirement as an architect, Van Wissen was succeeded by his eldest son Ad. Son Driek (1943-2010) was proclaimed Poet Laureate in 2005, son Jan van Wissen (1945) is a garden and landscape architect.
