Irene Verbeek (1945). Graduated in 1967 from the art academy in Utrecht with an honorable mention. At that time, on the advice of Johan Dijkstra, she joined the Free Painters Academy of the artists' association De Ploeg, where she was accepted as a member in the same year. In 1978 she declined that membership. From 1969 Irene Verbeek exhibited in, among others: Amsterdam at the Art & Architecture gallery, the South gallery, Galerie Choice, Studio Amazone The Hague in the Museum Meermanno Groningen in Pictura and the Groninger Museum
In 1991 a number of people united in a foundation and took the initiative to set up a museum around the work of Irene Verbeek in the north of Friesland: the OerKa Irene Verbeek Museum. The museum has been located in the mound church of Raard near Dokkum since 2001, where annually changing exhibitions can be seen.
