Education
Jacobus van Looy studied drawing at secondary school, which was very special because he grew up in an orphanage. Later he was educated at the Rijksakademie for the visual arts in Amsterdam.
Biography
Shortly after his student days, Jacobus van Looy started the Sint Lucas artists' association together with Willem Witsen and Maurits van der Valk. Van Looy developed a very interesting circle of friends. In 1901 Jacobus van Looy had his first solo exhibition in Amsterdam. In 1985 a prize was even named after Jacobus van Looy. Every 5 years, an artist who has delivered distinctive work receives the Jacobus van Looy Prize.
