Jan BOLLAERT (Antwerp 1958)
Bollaert took two drawing and sculpture courses at the Mortsel Art Academy and then studied graphic design and illustration at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1985 to 1989.
He lives and works in Antwerp.
Jan Bollaert's work belongs to neopop, an art movement influenced by pop art. Bollaert gives a razor-sharp portrayal of conventions, bourgeoisie and clichés, using photos of film stars, which at the same time gives his work a romantic and hopeful touch. Bollaert uses an old magazine printing technique: the image is set up in black and white and then colored with various layers of paint. This gives the work the realism that transports the viewer into the make-believe world that is depicted.
