It is not known where Jan de Vries received his education.
Jan Philippus Augustus de Vries mainly painted portraits, landscapes and religious scenes. De Vries lived in Apeldoorn from 1936, where, in addition to his artistry, he also taught drawing at a secondary school for a long time. He was a member of the Visual Artists in Apeldoorn and of the Dutch Association for Drawing Education. Out of modesty, De Vries never really sold his works; As a visual artist he also called himself 'amateur'.
