Expressionist painter - Founder 'De Ploeg'
Jan Wiegers visited the Academy Minerva in Groningen, the Academy of Rotterdam and the Academy of The Hague. He lived and worked in Groningen, Davos and Amsterdam.
The work of Jan Wiegers was strongly influenced by the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner whom he met in Davos in 1920. In 1917 Jan Wiegers founded the Groningen artists' group De Ploeg. Striking colors were used within this expressionist movement. In 1934 Jan Wiegers left for Amsterdam, where he became a professor at the Rijksacademie in 1953.
Jan Wiegers' more famous works include 'the dance couple' and 'Female Nude'. Jan Wiegers died in Amsterdam in 1959.
