The painter Johan Meijer (Zwolle, April 5, 1885 Laren, April 29, 1970) was, among others, a student of AM Gorter. For seven years he was his assistant, helping with cleaning brushes and mending cloths. He then went to Paris and Brussels to study. In 1912 he settled in Blaricum and since then he has mainly chosen the Gooiersgracht as his subject. He captured the trees and the water in all kinds of weather conditions. Especially birch trees and pollard willows. He had a great predilection for trees, his own garden looked like a forest. Meijer lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1912, then in Laren until 1925 (at Zandgat 906, Adresboek: Laren-Blaricum 1916) and then on Heideweg in Blaricum .
