Joop van Rijsbergen (1949-2006) about his own work: My work mainly concerns graphics, both free work and commissioned. In addition, I make illustrations and graphic designs and wall and decor paintings. As far as free work is concerned, the most commonly used techniques are engraving, mezzotint and etching. These are often used interchangeably. The resulting image is figurative but not realistic. It is about creating an atmosphere as we know it from our dreams, from lore, old myths and sagas. The colors are intended to enhance this atmosphere, not to suggest reality. In the end result unreality has become law of nature. The editions are small, ten to twenty copies. Occasion graphics are usually made to order. This usually concerns small graphic work on the occasion of eg birth, New Year, invitations, commemorations, ex-libris, logos and posters.'
