Jos VERWIEL (Vught 1954)
Verwiel followed training at the Academy for Visual Education Tilburg and at the Royal Academy for Art and Design 's Hertogenbosch.
Verwiel lives and works in Breda.
Verwiel started as a sculptor and now works mainly in two dimensions. His experience as a sculptor gives him understanding for the complexity of spatiality of knowledge and many craft techniques. There is often order and rhythm in Verwiel's art, but within this Verwiel always retains his freedom. Characteristic of his work are the maritime motifs, which, in addition to water and shipping, also include cartography and astronomy. Verwiel made many study trips to, among others, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain and Morocco. From 1994 to 2007, Verwiel lived and worked in the Greek village of Porto Heli; his experiences there have given his work a tension between reason and emotion. He has taught at the Tilburg Art Foundation, the Academy for Industrial Design Eindhoven, Center for Artistic Education Veghel and the Utrecht University of the Arts.
