Lucio MUÑOZ (Madrid 1929 – Madrid 1998)

Lucio Muñoz studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and lived in Paris in 1956, where he encountered informal painting. His early work evolved from figurative to abstract and was strongly influenced by Antoni Tàpies and Jean Dubuffet. Muñoz experimented with unconventional materials, using wood as a support, which he processed by burning, carving, and combining with pigment and other substances. This created layered, material paintings with a characteristic texture and relief. He worked primarily in dark tones, with black playing a prominent role, although his later work became lighter in tone. In addition to his independent work, Muñoz realized monumental commissions, including the altarpiece in the Basilica of Aránzazu.
