Ludwig MIES VAN DER ROHE (Aachen 1886 - Chicago 1969)
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German designer known, among other things, for his position as director of the Bauhaus. Originally trained as a contractor, he worked from 1908 in the studio of Peter Behrens, where he assisted in the design of the corporate identity for AEG, among other things. During the same period, Mies van der Rohe collaborated with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. In 1912 he started his own studio and after his military service he joined the Novembergruppe. There he mainly worked as an architect. Mies van der Rohe worked on designs for buildings, furnishings, furniture and graphic design. After the closure of the Bauhaus, he became an independent architect and moved to the United States a few years later. He worked on major projects until his death in 1969. Under the influence of De Stijl, Mies van der Rohe's design style developed from romantic to modernist and minimalist. He was also important for the development of the International Style.
