Lydia Schouten
Painter, Video artist, Photographer, Draftsman, Performance artist
Born in Leiden in 1948.
Lydia Schouten was one of the first to get started with the medium of video art. In her early films, she herself acted as and emphatically presented her female sexuality. Internationally, Lydia Schouten is known for performances, installations, drawings, photos and video films.
From 1978, Schouten's work can be divided into three periods. The first was to explore performance art, this was from 1978 to 1981. This was followed by the period of working with video from 1981 to 1988. And from then on Lydia Schouten's interest broadened to installations, often in combination with video, sound and photographic components.
In all periods there are a number of thematic elements that keep coming back. Examples include femininity, isolation and the relationship of mass media with sex and pornography.
Lydia Schouten studied at the Free Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and the Academy of Visual Arts Rotterdam. She lives and works in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
