Marcel WANDERS (Boxtel 1963)
In 1996 Marcel Wanders broke through with the design Knotted Chair for Droog. Wanders is known for his extravagant designs and interiors full of motifs. He is the opposite of a minimalist. Wanders is not concerned with what he makes, but with what it does to the viewer or user. He therefore uses shapes and style features from the past that lead to recognition, so that the viewer develops a bond with the object or space.
Wanders studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven (then: Academy of Industrial Design Eindhoven), the City Academy of Applied Arts (Maastricht), the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts (Hasselt) and the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Arnhem). In 2001 Wanders co-founded the design brand MOOOI, previously the label existed under the name Wanders Wonders. Today Marcel Wanders is a brand name. Dozens of employees work in his company who make designs for international clients.
