Maria de Ruiter de Witt (1947)
Maria de Ruiter de Witt drew at a young age, initially with Indian ink and paper. Flowers, landscapes, portraits of famous Dutch people, that's what she started with. Her in-laws encouraged her to further explore and develop this talent for drawing, largely in a self-taught manner. Later she joined the Hoorn drawing society Debutade and was active at the Blauwe Schuit, also in Hoorn. It soon became apparent that her preference for working with pastels was a difficult technique. The human being in his daily life was central to this. During study trips to France, Italy, the Czech Republic and Hungary, where she found inspiration, she was able to refine her pastel technique and master it down to the last detail. Her search for her talent, specialization and source of inspiration eventually led to the choice to put pastel portraits and everyday scenes on linen. An unruly surface, which leaves little room for corrections. But linen gives the pastel work a robust, surefire and at the same time a lively and warm appearance. Working with pastels on linen is a difficult technique, which Maria de Ruiter de Witt masters to perfection. She received a lot of praise for her work and method. In 1992 she received the honorary title of Maître du Pastel from the French Société des Pastellistes.
