Marianne van der Heijden (1922-1998)

Marianne van der Heijden (1922-1998)

Marianne van der HEIJDEN (Kerkrade 1922 - Maastricht 1998)

Painter, graphic artist.

Marianne van der Heijden was part of the group of Amsterdam Limburgers, with mainly male artists such as Ger Lataster, Jef Diederen, Pierre van Soest and Pieter Defesche. Silver medal associated with the Prix de Rome that made possible a study in Ravenna and a tour of Italy. Back in the Netherlands she moved into a studio in the Kerkrade castle Oud-Ehrenstein, where Frans Nols and Jef Diederen had also found a workplace.

Her drawing language from the years 1965-1975 is in line with that of Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky and Lucebert. How powerful that language is and how it has developed is apparent from the continuous series of exhibitions in various galleries throughout the country: between 1973-1990 more than forty, including twelve one-man exhibitions. Much of the exhibited work was purchased by private individuals, but museums, companies and government institutions (Het Catharijneconvent in Utrecht; Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht and Gemeentemuseum Roermond; DSM Geleen; KNP in Meerssen; ABP and Open University in Heerlen; Province of Limburg, Maastricht) also took work from her in their collection.

At the end of the seventies, the first color etchings were created according to their own procedure and with their own imagery. Now her experiences, her inner experience, came down on paper: at the same time poetic and terrifying, desperate and humorous. 'The tension of emotions and the pleasure of tranquility are the two poles between which my work moves', she noted at the time. She also did not limit herself to etchings, but also made gouaches and acrylic paintings.
