Matthijs Hendriks about his work. My work is fundamental. It is not so much about tradition, image or expression, about depiction of reality, it is reality itself. The painting is about the act of painting and the traces it leaves behind. I am not referring to anything outside the work itself: it is what it is.
But the work is also about imagination. I try to test the viewer's perception, try to deny the intrinsic reality of the painting – unchanging, flat and static. This creates a contradiction that I find interesting: it is what it is, but it still creates illusions, associations and imagination.
But my work is above all about perception. The image is only finished in the mind of the viewer. And how does it perceive? This looking is not unbiased, the act of looking is "guilty" for me. The viewer sees for himself what he wants and can see, makes his own world, makes my painting himself. My images are therefore not only about painting itself or about imagination, or about the apparent contradiction between the two, but above all about what precedes it: perception and subsequent signification.
My images may seem meaningless, arbitrary or rational, but they are not to be understood. They want to deregulate, to amaze, to excite the viewer by putting him on the wrong track: to put him somewhat out of balance, and thus in a more dynamic state. Ultimately, art is about our view of reality. And want to invite my paintings to look again and to be taken along by the process of perception.
