Max Bill (1908-1994)

Artist

Max Bill (Winterthur 1908 - Berlin 1994)

Max Bill was a Swiss architect, painter, graphic artist, sculptor and writer, who was important for concrete abstract art. He trained as a silversmith at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich and then studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Bauhaus in Dessau. After his return to Zurich, he became very important for constructivism in Switzerland. Like Theo van Doesburg, he worked on the principle of Concrete Art, stating that universality could only be achieved through clarity. His aim was to express abstract concepts in simple shapes and lines, purely mathematical figures. He was influenced by Mondrian, Kandinsky and Klee. However, it is not his works of art, but his watches that he is most remembered for.
