The artist's early work is quite dark and gloomy in contrast to the later work, which is very colorful and sometimes feels a bit 'CoBra-esque'. Recurring subjects in her work are the small everyday things in life; as, for example, the behavior of her cat is often depicted. The artist made hundreds of paintings, collages and drawings and also wrote several collections of poetry. Meertje Kaal died in May 2016 in her studio home in Amsterdam, where she had lived for about fifty years.
