Syvert Nicolaas BASTERT (Maarsseveen 1854 – Loenen aan de Vecht 1939)
Nicolaas Bastert was a Dutch painter, best known for his views along the river Vecht. He is counted among the 'after bloom' of the Hague School. Initially he also seemed to want to enter the trade, but after meeting the young painter Geo Poggenbeek he decided to start a career in painting. In 1876 he was admitted to the State Academy of Art in Amsterdam. In 1878 Bastert traveled with his friend Poggenbeek through Switzerland, Italy and France. At first both artists worked together in a studio in Amsterdam, later Bastert would have his own Atelier in The Hague. He especially made many river views near the Vecht, not only in Breukelen but also in Maarssen and Nieuwersluis. He was also called "The king of light". From 1885 his work was regularly sold. This enabled him to develop his own style in peace. Bastert won gold medals at exhibitions in Amsterdam, Munich and Paris. He was a meritorious member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague, of which most Haagse Scholers were members.
