Oiva TOIKKA (Viborg 1931 - 2019)
Ceramic designer Oiva Koikka started working for Arabia in Helsinki right after his studies in 1956. He worked here for several years and in 1963 he was hired at Nuutajärvi. His glassware can be recognized by the light colors and thick shapes. Toikka drew his inspiration from both contemporary design and folk art. His cheerful, carefree and playful shapes were both exclusively and mechanically produced. An example of industrial design are the Kastehelmi glasses from 1964. These glasses became Nuutajärvi's best-selling product and are still produced by Iittala today. More recently he made glass bird figures to which a new series is added every year. Toikka caused the dividing line between art and design to blur.
