Paul Hulshof (1950)

Artist

Paul Hulshof (Amsterdam, January 14, 1950) is a Dutch illustrator.

Biography[edit] Paul Hulshof attended evening classes at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He wrote Glazewijn and the Chess Scandal (1973) together with Robert V. Schipper. Shortly afterwards, together with Henk van Kerkwijk, he made Arthur en de lettervreter as the Children's Book Week Gift of 1973 and he illustrated Nachtpapa by Maria Gripe. In 1975 he received the Gouden Penseel for Iolo will not play from Alet Schouten. In Vrij Nederland he wrote about this: “When it was over, I decided not to illustrate a children's book for the time being”[1]. In the same year Glazewijn appeared in England as The Quest for the Missing Queen. After that Hulshof worked as an illustrator for magazines (Donald Duck, De Revisor, Haagse Post, Avenue, Vrij Nederland) and as a designer of book covers. In 1978 he illustrated The Adventures of Olivier Twist because, as he said, "the book fascinated me and because I felt like it"[2]. Between 1979 and 1985 he drew weekly for NRC Handelsblad. In 1997 he made illustrations for Maybe Really Happened by Annie MG Schmidt. He also designed a series of textbooks, in which he combined text and drawing into an effective language teaching tool.
