Peter Behrens (1868-1940)
Artist
Artist and designer Peter Behrens started his career in the Jugendstil style with illustrations and designs for book bindings. He slowly exchanged this style for a more rationalistic and ultimately modernist visual language. These changes were catalyzed by, among other things, his design for the Behrens Haus, his work as a designer of objects, housing for workers and the house style for the company AEG and his involvement in the founding of the Deutscher Werkbund. Behrens became known for his vision on design, industrialization and standardization: he looked for ways to achieve the same design quality in standardized products that were made by machine that handmade products possess. In the early twentieth century, Behrens collaborated on architectural projects with Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. After the First World War, Behrens focused on Expressionism and the International Style. Before his death in 1940 he still worked as a designer of porcelain, glassware and linoleum. In addition, he fulfilled the role of director in the architecture departments within the Akademie der Bildende Künste and the Preußischen Akademie der Künste.
