Phil Bloom (1945)
Phil BLOOM (Berkel en Rodenrijs, 27 November 1945) is a Dutch artist. In 1965 she started studying at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, but after one year she stopped there to continue her studies at the Free Academy, also located in The Hague. From 1967 to 1974 Bloom studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Early in her career she drew, among other things, for the student magazine Propria Cures and worked on film credits. Around her thirties she left for New York (Pratt Institute) for five years and after that she also lived in India for a few years. In the mid-sixties Phil Bloom was included in 'Fluxus', an artistic movement that was highly alternative in the Netherlands at the time. Among other things, Fluxus set itself the goal of breaking through the 'bourgeois frailty' of society and used Phil as a crowbar for this. On October 9, 1967, the then 21-year-old Phil Bloom appeared completely naked in the VPRO program Hoepla, which was a groundbreaking first for Dutch television. It led to great commotion and even to parliamentary questions in the House of Representatives. Phil also made the international press with her performance. It prompted Playboy to include an interview of her in the October 1968 issue with the headline "TV's first nude." After that, Phil got fed up with the constant focus of public attention on her nudity. Phil Bloom currently lives and works in Antwerp.
