Piet Snel (Leiden 1911 - Groningen 1991) Born in Leiden, he lived here until the beginning of the war. He received his first private drawing and painting lessons from the artist H. Batenburg between 1928 and 1932 in Leiden. During the war years, because of the scarce food situation in the West Netherlands, he left for the North Netherlands, where he lived for years on the edge of the village of Peize in the kitchen part of a farm together with the Groningen painter Ad Pieters. Died in 1991 in Groningen. Piet was a welcome figure. He met Ali at butcher De Graaf. Piet visited there regularly and Ali occasionally helped with the household. Ali and Piet had a relationship that lasted for several years until Ali broke off the relationship. Piet Snel supported himself by making and selling art. Together with Ali, he visited the richer bourgeoisie on the canals in Groningen to sell his art. He had his paintings framed at Kunsthandel Van Dijk ("separate frames"), Lage der A 29 in Groningen ("near the Visscher Bridge). Piet and Ali regularly went out in the Groninger Harmonie, where the Groninger Orchestra Association gave concerts. It is difficult to assign a date to a work, Piet wrote nothing about his work and never gave it a date. Piet was a special man, he not only lived from art, he also lived for it. He also taught at the Nijverheidsschool and the Volkshogeschool in Groningen. He watercolored, painted, etched, made woodcuts and drew travel studies in France and Scandinavia, among others, and incorporated fantastic, surreal and abstract motifs. van De Prinsenhof, Het Narrenschip (1950) and NU 1959 a boat that lay in the canals of Groningen.
