Reinier Craeyvanger (1812-1880)
Utrecht 1812 - 1880 Amsterdam: Reinier CRAEYVANGER was the brother of Gijsbertus Craeyvanger, who was also a painter. He studied at the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, with, among others, Jan Willem Pieneman. Craeyvanger painted many cityscapes, but also landscapes, genre works, interiors and portraits. Many of his works were strongly influenced by Jan Steen. Craeyvanger was also a prominent etcher. At the end of the 1840s he lived in The Hague for several years and was co-founder of De Haagse Etsclub there. He was also a member and chairman of Arti et Amicitiae for five years. He died in Amsterdam in 1880, at the age of 67. Craeyvanger's work is among others in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Centraal Museum in Utrecht and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. His etchings are much sought after by collectors today.
