Rity Jansen Heijtmajer initially trained as a sculptor. This is probably the reason that her paintings and graphics give a spatial impression. Nevertheless, it is in keeping with a tradition in modern art that denies spatiality. Style artists Piet Mondriaan and Theo van Doesburg can be seen as her predecessors. Like Rity Jansen Heijtmajer, they use primary colors (yellow, blue, red) and distinguish lines and geometric shapes.
The underlying idea of these artists is that (painting) art is not there to depict three-dimensional reality on a flat surface. This function has been taken over by photography and film. The flat surface of the painting only has to refer to itself. In the most basic yet complete way, the plane can be divided into geometric shapes, lines and primary colors. These are the building blocks with which Mondriaan, van Doesburg and also Rity Jansen Heijtmajer compose their paintings.
Besides the suggestion of space, Rity Jansen Heijtmajer distinguishes herself from her predecessors by the illusion of movement. Simple geometric shapes such as diamonds and parallelograms are grouped in a dynamic composition. Heijtmajer works systematically. She does not deviate from her traditional geometric repertoire of visual means. She often works in series, where shifts in composition, form and color are displayed frame by frame. Despite the strict framework in which she works, her work is characterized by a certain playfulness. The viewer is invited to solve the dynamic puzzles she creates.
