Robert SMIT (Delft 1941)

Goldsmith, sculptor, conceptual artist, draftsman, teacher, photographer, jewelery designer. After his training as an instrument maker at the Technical School in Delft (1954-1957), he came into contact with the art world. He became close friends with the artist Jan Schoonhoven (1914–1994) and, partly on his advice, started designing jewelry. Smit, he studied at the Staatliche Kunst und Werkschüle in Pforzheim, where he graduated cum laude in 1966. In the 1970s he focused on visual work – photos, drawings, objects – that is conceptual and in line with the ideas of the Zero movement. Robert Smit was a teacher at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam). He was also a lecturer at Studio Alchimia in Milan and in 2007 guest lecturer at the Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry in Tokyo.
