Rupert van der Linden (1930)
Rupert van der Linden (The Hague 1930), illustrator and animation filmmaker. Van der Linden started his career as an illustrator at the Dutch Education Film. Van der Linden became best known for the series of comic strips that he and Jan Blokker made between 1961 and 1963 for Algemeen Handelsblad. Together they made ten stories about Master Van Kwikschoten, a lawyer with an alpinopet who listens to the national anthem standing up every day, but still considers himself a rebel. This mixture of goodness and eccentricity is reminiscent of that of Pa Pinkelman, hero of the newspaper strip that Godfried Bomans and Carol Voges made for de Volkskrant for many years. After the comic strip success with Jan Blokker, he made a number of short animation films, such as De Bloemen (1967) and Mister X (1969). He later made a number of informational films for Postbus 51 for television. He also gained fame for designing film titles, such as that of Karel Appel's Reality (1962). Later in his career, Van der Linden would only concentrate on free drawing and painting. Rupert van der Linden loved chess and made many illustrations for chess books and magazines. Since 1982 he has also made caricatures of the chess players during all major chess tournaments in the Netherlands. In 2010 Rupert van der Linden received the “Bulletje en Boonestaak Scale” from the Stripschap (the Dutch center for those interested in comics). This prize is awarded annually to someone who has been of special significance to the Dutch visual story.
