Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado is a Brazilian photographer who has lived in Paris since 1973. Although he graduated as an economist, he was mainly known for his documentary photography, for which he traveled the world for years. His photos show the effect on people when their lives are determined by poverty, famine, industrialization and political oppression. He has published several photo books about this social problem and has also received various prizes for this. He traveled to more than a hundred countries for his work.
