Sientje Mesdag van Houten (1834-1909)
Sientje Mesdag van Houten (Groningen, December 23, 1834 - The Hague, March 20, 1909) was a Dutch painter and the wife of Hendrik Willem Mesdag, the Dutch marine painter of the Hague School. She was the eldest of seven children of Derk van Houten and Barbara Elisabeth Meihuizen. One of her brothers was the later minister Samuel van Houten. Her father had a large sawmill on the Damsterdiep. She married Mesdag on April 23, 1856. Sientje was a strong moral supporter for her husband, especially when she enthusiastically supported him in 1866, when he gave up his business profession to devote himself exclusively to painting. She herself only started painting in 1879, after she lost her only child, eight-year-old Klaas. She devoted herself to landscape painting and still lifes. JC d'Arnaud Gerkens (1823-1892) helped her with the drawing, while she was helped for painting by her husband and by her cousin by marriage Lourens Alma Tadema. In 1881 she participated in the Panorama Mesdag painting. She distinguished herself in several exhibitions. In 1884 one of her landscapes was awarded a gold medal in Amsterdam and a bronze medal was awarded in Paris for a heath landscape. In 1893 she made a great impression at an exhibition in Chicago. When Sientje Mesdag turned 70, in 1905, she was honored with a large tribute exhibition in the Pulchri Studio halls. She was already, on December 21, 1904, inducted as an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In 1906 the couple Mesdag-Van Houten celebrated their golden wedding. She died in The Hague on 20 March 1909. She is buried at Oud Eik en Duinen. Her husband followed in 1915.
