Stephan Vanfleteren (Kortrijk, 1969) is a Flemish photographer.

Biography

Vanfleteren studied photography at the Hogeschool Sint-Lukas Brussels. Initially he mainly worked for the Flemish newspaper De Morgen, but his work also appears in magazines such as Paris Match, Le Monde 2, Independent Magazine, Die Zeit, Knack, Humo and Volkskrant Magazine. Work

Vanfleteren's style is characterized by sobriety and character photography. He shoots in black and white and leaves out as much as possible.

From September 28, 2007 to February 10, 2008, the exhibition Belgicum, about the book of the same name written by Vanfleteren, ran in the Photo Museum Antwerp. That book paints a picture of Belgium in a social context.

In 2009 the retrospective exhibition Portrait 1989 - 2009 gave an impression of his penetrating black-and-white portraits. The exhibition took place in the Nieuw Circus, an old circus building in Ghent, and attracted almost 60,000 visitors in a few months.[1] Prices

Stephan Venfleteren won prizes at World Press Photo and European Fuji Awards and published the book 'Elvis & Presley' with Swiss photographer Robert Huber about a hilarious journey across the US dressed as the deceased legend.

In 2009 Vanfleteren won the Louis Paul Boon Prize, a Belgian art prize that is awarded to an artist who excels in social involvement and who focuses on his bond with people.

Vanfleteren also provided Etienne Nkasi's cover photo for David Van Reybrouck's book Congo: a history. This book won the Prize for the Most Beautiful Book Cover in 2011.[2]

On May 6, 2011, Vanfleteren received the Henri Nannen Preis, the most important award for photography in Germany for the photo series Es gibt was Neues hier seit gestern in DU-Zeitschrift für Kultur.[3][4]

In 2012 Vanfleteren won the National Portrait Prize with a photo by Rem Koolhaas. Books
