Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980)

Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980)

Tamara de Lempicka, maiden name Tamara Gorska (16 May 1898 - 18 March 1980 Cuernavaca, Mexico) was a Polish Art Deco painter. De Lempicka was born into a prosperous and prominent Polish family. Her father was a lawyer, her mother a well-known society lady. Decisive for her artistic development was a trip she made in 1911 to Italy, where she came into contact with Renaissance painting. After her parents' divorce in 1912, she went to a boarding school in Lausanne. In 1916 she married the lawyer Tadeusz Lempicki (1888-1951) and went to live in Saint Petersburg. After the October Revolution (1917) they both fled to Copenhagen, where in 1920 they had a daughter, Kizette. Since her husband could not find work, De Lempicka started painting for their livelihood from that time on. She opened an art studio and also apprenticed herself with Maurice Denis and Andr_ Lhote. She had her first success with her participation in the international Paris Exposition des arts decoratifs et industriels modernes in 1925, the first major art deco exhibition. Within a short time she grew into one of the most sought-after painters of her time. Her paintings combine a cool, renaissance-reminiscent practicality with a sensual sultry. In doing so, she also positioned herself as a diva of art, moving to a luxurious apartment in Paris after her first success and having several high-profile affairs. In 1928 she divorced her husband and in 1933 she married the extremely wealthy Hungarian industrialist Raoul Baron Kuffner de Di_szegh (1886-1961). In the mid-1930s, De Lempicka fell prey to severe depression and her artistic production stagnated. In 1939, after a short vacation, the Lempicka-Kuffner family settled permanently in the United States and later in Mexico. She went back to work with renewed energy, but her Art Deco style found little resonance after the war. In the 1950s she tried to adapt her style towards the more popular modern abstract art forms, but she never regained the status she had in the 1920s and 1930s. It was not until the end of the 1960s that there was a renewed interest in her work, not least because of the then-popular 'poster culture'. Tamara de Lempicka died in Mexico in 1980.
