Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985)
Artist
Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala studied sculpture at the Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu in Helsinki and then worked as both a sculptor and a graphic designer. In the 1940s he worked as an independent and later artistic director at glass manufacturer Iittala, where he won an award with Kaj Franck and made various modernist and organic designs. He gained a lot of fame during this period with his Kantarelli vases. Wirkkala was associated with Iittala throughout his life. In the 1950s, he worked as an artistic director at his old educational institution and was employed by Raymond Loewy in New York. Wirkkala made designs for glass, furniture, sculptures, graphics and public spaces. These designs vary from utensils that can be found in everyday life, such as packaging and crockery, to unique autonomous art objects.
